not so secret garden

 

While in Canberra my mother, brother and I went to the National Gallery of Australia to see the much hyped Renaissance exhibition. I enjoyed it from a historial point of view, but less so for the aesthetics of the pieces. However, there was a particular wonky-googly-eyed depiction of Jesus (Christ the Redeemer by Botticelli) that I found rather entertaining.

After the exhibition we went for a ramble in the beautiful sculpture gardens - gardens which you can easily visit free of charge whenever you please. Between 12.30 and 2pm daily the gardens are filled with a 'fog sculpture' which is totally delightful and very beautiful, giving the garden a slightly magical ambiance. sunny Sunday

Today Karl and I went on a nice long walk to meet a friend for coffee. It's actually the most perfect day outside - mid 20s and sunny, total delight. Young Karl gave up about half a kilometre from home on the way back so I got a good work out carrying the little meatloaf home.

I love this dress for its colours, but I have no idea how or why they came up with the pattern. It's relatively loose in the top but so tight around the thighs, to the point that when walking in it, it actually twists around so I'm constantly tugging at it. Incredibly annoying.

I'm going to spend this lovely afternoon baking and relaxing while Karl snoozes and recovers from his little marathon. I hope you're enjoying your Sunday too

santa claws

I'm a little late uploading our Christmas photo, but I think you'll agree it was worth the wait. Karl was a perfect little angel when we met Santa, I can easily see this becoming a Christmas tradition. He is mightily photogenic, if I do say so myself.

photobooth phun

I'm a little impatient and did intend to wait for my secondhand replacement camera to arrive before making any outfit posts, but I quite liked what I was wearing yesterday so utilised photobooth and post slightly crappy photos instead.

Yesterday was the first warm day in Melbourne in forever, we actually had a very chilly start to summer which saw me digging out tights to wear and blankets to snuggle into. I was pretty exicted because it meant I could wear my uglycomfy fake batek print pants.

I love legitimate theatre

Well, I made it. Throught the first semester at least! Now I have a few weeks to organise my apartment, catch up on cuddles with Karl, stock my freezer with nutritious dinners and try to relax before doing it all over again.

Last night I joined some lovely friends for a trip to the Malthouse Theatre to see A Golem Story (overall I enjoyed it, but there were certainly some glaring flaws, mostly in regards to timing, why can't things be tight?) and our trademark cheese and wine afterwards. I was very excited to have the opportunity to dress nicely and not pick my clothes based on comfort and whether or not I could get paint on them.

happy birthday, Queenie!

This weekend in the Queen's birthday long weekend. However, our reigning monarch is not the only old lady with a penchant for hats and silly looking dogs who is celebrating, I am too!

I'm not really one to make a fuss over myself for birthdays, beyond generally having a nice day. As I see it, there are so many more important things going on in life and the world at large for it to really matter, and I am well passed all the 'special' birthdays.

Having said that, this weekend has taken me a little by surprise given that as of Friday morning I had no definite plans. I have been absolutely spoilt rotten by my generous and amazing friends. I have been plied with marvellous cheeses, scrumptious wines, plentiful cocktails, delicious breakfast, lush chocolates and even some cheeky birthday cake. And most importantly, stimulating company with lots of giggles attached. 

So a very big and far-reaching thank you to all the lovely people in my life for making this weekend totally wonderful, I feel very fortunate to have you all in my life. Thank you also to the important people in my life who I'm sadly geographically separated from but still went to the effort of contacting me (how my little brother managed to prank me from China is a marvel).

Karl wore a super-adorable sweater, bought from a $2 shop. He was a very popular boy today with lots of cuddles from passersby.

I had my old favourite, the egg and bacon tart from Sugardough which was totally delicious, as always. Several perfect coffees accompanied breakfast and some (FREE, thanks lovely waitress) cake accompanied me home. 

 

Now if you'll excuse me, I have a prior commitment with the couch and my dvd player to attend to.

pretendsies

Sometimes it is completely necessary to forget, or at least push aside, impending doom and its associate stress and have a day off, pretending all is well and under control academically, financially and otherwise. The reality can wait until tomorrow.

I filled my pretendsie day with a sleep-in, a long overdue (as in 6 months since last visit) trip to my darling hairdresser (who did not judge my horrid hair in the slightest, bless her) and coffee with a wonderful friend. I feel all the more human for it and will calmly conquer my mountain range (no longer a single mountain) of style research, drawings, annotations and essay tomorrow.

Karl hasn't visited blog-town in a while, so I thought I'd let him pop in for a visit. He is getting very big and strong. We are close to the anniversary of him coming to live with me and of course I'm enough of a crazy-dog lady to celebrate it with him.

Before I go, I must extend a thank you to lovely people of Miss Marmalade for letting Karl, our coffee date and I stay (way) past closing time, this is why we love you!

needs more bow

I've become very lazy with my day-to-day dressing. There's nothing particularly wrong with that, except I always feel happier and more confident when I put more than 30 seconds into selecting which garments I'll cover myself with for the day.  The lack of effort also means there's very little to work with for outfit posts ('here I am wearing that giant grey t-shirt dress again..'). Thankfully last Tuesday I had a little more time on my hands to find something a titch more fun.

I adore this skirt and barely ever wear it which is just silly. It's such fun spending the day with a big bow on your tooshie.

a break

Last Sunday morning I temporarily climbed out from the mountain of homework I currently reside under and met a lovely lady friend for a much needed break. We headed to our (and Karl's) greatly loved favourite, Miss Marmalade where we were made very welcome as usual.

I devoured a very delectable stack of pancakes, with raspeberries, a lemon curd sauce and toasted almonds - a delicate balance of sweet and sour, divine. The coffee, service and food were all excellent as usual.
